August 2018 News and Schedule Updates

August brings a new school year for kids and a new schedule for the Atlanta S.E.E.D.s program at Global Dance Studio & Theater, which means some changes for the drumming program! We have some new classes for children and adults as well as changes to existing class times, so please read this email carefully.

Youth Classes

NEW West African Drumming, Wed. 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Level 1 Middle Eastern Drumming, Fri. 4:00-4:45 p.m.
Level 2 Middle Eastern Drumming, Fri. 4:45-5:30 p.m.

All youth classes are taught by Global Dance’s percussion coordinator, Julia Benson-Slaughter.
Adult Classes

NEW Beginning West African Drumming with Amy Jackson, Tues. 6:00-7:00 p.m. starting 9/4.
Intermediate West African Drumming with Amy Jackson, Tues. 7:00-8:15 p.m., starting 9/4
NEW Beginning Middle Eastern Drumming with Julia Benson-Slaughter, Sat. 11:00-noon

Saturday Practice/Jam Sessions

Middle Eastern Music noon – 1 p.m.
West African Music from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

The Saturday Practice/Jam sessions will now meet in the Raqs Room. Cost for each session is $20/month, or $8/week drop-in. Youth enrolled in the S.E.E.D.s courses may attend these sessions at no additional cost.

Janessa has been waiting all summer to join the drumming fun — now she gets the chance! I don’t know who’s more excited about that, her or me!

African Drum & Dance TOGETHER!

The Youth West African Drumming class & the Saturday West African Jam will coordinate with the new African Dance class taught by Christan Poret to teach the rhythms for the song that the students are dancing to. This will give the dancers and drummers the chance to work together for a true live performance!
